Prof Maffulli was the first non-British professor to be awarded the FRCS(Orth) (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Orthopaedics). He also obtained the Diploma in Sports Medicine from the Society of Apothecaries and the Scottish Royal Colleges Joint Board respectively in Sports Medicine in London in 1990 and Edinburgh in 1991. In 2012, he was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
Prof Maffulli has taught across Europe and in the United States, and has been made an Honorary Fellow of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, a Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Association.
